My mother has never been very active, but over the past few months, she’s been spending more and more time vegging out at home. Since then, there’s been a change in her personality—she’s moody and fixates on the negative in every situation. Could her lack of physical activity be making her depressed?

Most people worry about the physical health risks of leading a sedentary lifestyle, but the impact it has on our mental health is just as important. And your mother’s lack of activity can be associated with her overall mood.
Depression is a complex, multi-factorial condition and isn’t likely the result of just one thing, like a sedentary lifestyle. However, it’s well established that being active can help improve symptoms of depression. In fact, studies have shown that individuals who are physically inactive are more likely to report symptoms of depression and anxiety compared to their more active counterparts.
In addition, being sedentary often means not being around other people or engaging in social activities. Social connections and interactions provide emotional support, reduce stress, and foster a sense of belonging. Without these interactions, individuals may experience loneliness, which can be a significant risk factor for depression and anxiety.
A sedentary lifestyle may also mean more time spent indoors and less exposure to sunlight, which can have a negative impact on mood.
If you’re worried about your mother’s mental health, urge her to make an appointment with her health care provider. You can also encourage her to become more active. For example, you can gently invite her to go on regular walks with you, suggest starting a garden in the backyard, or possibly offer to accompany her to a local exercise class.
